Determine a Computer's IP Address
For Windows 2000/XP:
Open the command prompt
Type “ipconfig /all”, then Enter
If your “IP Address” starts with “128.193” and you are located on campus, then this is a valid IP.
If your “IP Address” starts with “169.” this means your computer has defaulted to an invalid IP address.
- Type “ipconfig /release”, then Enter
- Then type “ipconfig /renew”, then Enter (this can take a few minutes)
This prompts your computer to request a new IP from the server
Type “ipconfig /all”, then Enter to see if your IP address has refreshed to a valid campus IP (i.e. starts with “128.193”)
If this does not work, restarting your computer may fix the problem
For Windows 9x:
Click Start, Run
Type “winipcfg”, then Enter
A program will load that has your network info
You may have to click the pull-down box to select your Ethernet card; do not select PPP, VPN or Dial-Up Adapter
If your “IP Address” starts with “128.193” and you are located on campus, then this is a valid IP.
If your “IP Address” starts with “169” this means your computer has defaulted to an invalid IP address
If this does not work, restarting your computer may fix the problem.
