SITUATION:
Starting this year, the United States has
extended Daylight Savings Time. The new Daylight Savings time
period has changed during the Spring from the first Sunday in
April to the second Sunday in March and during the Fall from the
last Sunday in October to the first Sunday in November. Computers
will need to be updated to have the correct time during the
extended DST periods. It is important to verify that your
computer systems are ready for the time change.
Microsoft has recently made available an update
to handle the Extended Daylight Savings Time for Windows XP
Service Pack 2. If your system runs Windows XP Service Pack 1 or
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 there is no update, but a patch that
can be applied manually. If your system runs an older version of
Windows you will need to change your system's time manually. If
your computer is a member of the SCIENCE Domain (most all
university desktops) then the updates are handled automatically
for Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 SP4 systems. The manual patch
for Windows 2000 SP4 machines will be delivered remotely. If your
computer is not on the SCIENCE Domain (personal computers and
most university laptops), and runs Windows XP SP2, updates are
either installed automatically or if set to manual are available
through Windows Update. Please run Windows Update if you are not
sure. If your computer is not on the SCIENCE Domain and runs
Windows 2000 SP4, we can assist in installing the patch on your
computer. How to Run Windows Update - Open Internet Explorer Go
to Tools --> Windows Update We strongly recommend you verify
your system has been properly updated. Microsoft has provided a
tool to show a computer's DST settings. The tool is available at:
Windows TZ
Editor The correct DST setting for Pacific Standard Time is:
Start Date/Time: Second Sunday of March at
2:00:00 AM End Date/Time: First Sunday of November at 2:00:00
AM
If you use Microsoft Outlook for
your personal calendar, you will need to run a small utility due
to the unique way Outlook calculates time. This utility will
correct appointments scheduled during the new Extended Daylight
Savings Time period: March 11 - April 1 and October 28 - November
4. However, for this utility to be effective, it must be run
after the Operating System is updated. The utility is available
at: Outlook TZ

Apple has recently made available an
update to handle the Extended Daylight Savings Time for Mac OS X
10.3 and 10.4 computers. If your computer run MacOS X 10.3 or
10.4 please run Software Update from the Apple Menu in the upper
left hand corner. If your computer runs an older version of MacOS
you will need to change your system's time manually.
If you use Microsoft Entourage,
you will need to update Microsoft Office 2004 to the current
update level 11.3.4. To update Office 2004, run Microsoft
AutoUpdate from your Applications folder or go to Check for
Updates under the Help menu in any Office application. This
update is not cumulative, so you may need to update Office a
couple of times before it is up to date.
Updates have been available for several months. Please be certain your computer is up to date with a current set of patches.
