Using the File Manager in Usermin

This is how to get to the file manager, and how to use it once you are there. There are a few prerequisites for using this though:

  • The File Manager uses Java, so a Java plugin must be installed for your favorite browser. You can get Java here.
  • Some of the buttons in the File Manager use pop-up windows to give you a dialog. Be sure that your pop-up blocker is turned off for the File Manager.

Once you have the requirments filled, this should lead you through using the File Manager.

  1. With your web-browser, go to http://secure.science.oregonstate.edu
  2. To login, use your Science account credentials.
  3. To access the file manager click the File Manager icon.
  4. This link will take you to the Java applet that allows you to remotely manager your files. There may be some warnings about invalid security certificates. It is safe to say yes to these.
  5. After the File Manager interface loads, you are presented with a directory structure, with numerous buttons available at the top.
  6. There are three separate panels, that each do separate jobs.
    • The first panel is the directory structure panel:

This panel allows you to browse to different directories in the file structure. It will default at your home directory, but allow you to navigate to other directories that you have access to.
    • The next panel is the file panel:

This panel will display all of the files and folders located in the directory path located at the top of this panel. Double clicking a specific file will allow you download the file, while clicking on a folder will open that folder. Also, you can navigate directly to a folder by putting path to the directory in the text field at the top of the file panel.
    • The final panel is the button panel:
      1. The Index button takes you back to the main Usermin page.
      2. The Config button takes you to an advanced configuration page.
      3. The Save button will allow you to save the selected file to your local computer.
        • Select the file that you would like to save, and then click the Save button. It will give you a file download dialog.
        • Select where to save the file on your local computer, and click save. This will download the selected file.
      4. The Edit button allows you to edit various files through the same interface. Note: Some files, such as executables and zipped files are not types that can be edited with this.
      5. The Refresh button will reload the file lists
      6. The Info button displays advanced information about a certain file/folder. This also allows you to change permissions on a file.
      7. The Find button gives you a search dialog that will allow you to find a file in the given directory.
      8. The Delete button allows you to delete a file/folder.
      9. The New File button presents a dialog that allows you to create a new text file, and also edit it at the time of creation.
      10. The Upload button allows you to upload a file from your local computer to the current directory.
        • When you press the Upload button, this pop-up dialog presents itself. Please be wary of popup blockers, as they will prevent this dialog from showing.
        • Click the Browse button, and then choose the file you would like to be uploaded to the directory listed in the next box.
        • Click the Upload button, it will process the file, and then the dialog will disappear.
        • Look at the File Panel, and you will now see your newly uploaded file.
      11. The New Folder button allows you to create a new folder in the current directory.
      12. The New Link button allows you to create shortcuts from one file to another. In the first text box, you put the path to the new shortcut, and in the second text box, you put the path to the file you are linking to.
      13. The Rename button allows you to rename a file/folder.
      14. The Copy button allows you to create a copy of a file to be used with Paste.
      15. The Cut button works just as the Copy button does, but will remove the original file after it is pasted.
      16. The Paste button works in conjunction with Copy and Cut. Using this after using Copy or Cut will paste the copied files or folders to the current directory.
